The Harai-tsurikomi-ashi (Lift-pull foot sweep) Waza consists of destabilizing the opponent with a lifting motion, and then sweeping his leg out from under him.
This Waza normally begins with Tori grasping the side of Uke collar with his Tsurite (Lifting hand), and the mid-sleeve area with his Hiki-te (Pulling hand). However, in cases where the mid-sleeve area cannot be grasped, Tori may also grasp both sides of Uke collar.
Although this has the merit of allowing the Waza to be executed in either the left or right direction, it also requires more caution because both of Uke hands are free.
Tori advances toward Uke, forcing him to retreat, and executes the Harai-tsurikomi-ashi (Lift-pull foot sweep) Waza at the moment when Uke steps forward to push back against Tori advance.
Because Uke must be pulled forward in order for this Waza to be effective, Uke must be pulled forward strongly if his forward step motion is insufficient.
At the moment when Uke center of gravity shifts to his advanced foot, Tori uses both his Hiki-te (Pulling hand) and Tsurite (Lifting hand) to throw Uke down into the front corner.
To execute the throw, Tori places rapidly sweeps the back of his foot from the outer to the inner side, striking the outer ankle area of Uke weight supporting leg. Following the sweep, Tori turns and throws Uke down with a twisting motion of his body.
The sweeping foot and the lifting hand work in tandem to lift and throw Uke .
